What to Include in an Automotive Press Guarding Quote

A request for a press guard can bring back two quotes for different equipment. One supplier may price a fixed light curtain across an access point. Another may propose ram-mounted optics that track the tool area on a press brake. A drawing with only the opening width leaves both suppliers guessing about how the machine is operated. Give them the machine type, the operator’s tasks, and the evidence you will need at handover.

Show the work and the access on one drawing

State whether the project is a power press, a press brake or another machine type. Describe what the operator does during a normal cycle, then add setup, tool changes and scrap removal. Show the material path and where a person can approach the hazard from the front, sides or rear. An opening used to feed a blank may need a different assessment from a gate used to clear a jam.

The press and press brake protection catalogue illustrates why the equipment description matters. A fixed field at an opening and a ram-mounted optical system cover different geometry. Use the catalogue to describe the kind of configuration under consideration. The responsible machine integrator should establish which safeguarding arrangement is suitable for the task and applicable requirements.

Give the supplier a schedule of items to price

Ask for a response listing the exact sensor and controller codes, documented detection capability, protected height, operating span and output type. Put the brackets, cables and mounting drawings on their own lines, so it is clear what is included. If the quote specifies beam spacing, ask where the exact model’s minimum detectable object is documented. The two values describe different properties. Request the instructions and evidence for the exact configuration being quoted.

Where a light curtain is being considered, the light curtain selection and positioning guide explains the difference between sensor response and the complete stopping chain. Give the integrator the available stop-time record and the conditions under which it was measured. If that record is missing, leave final positioning open and assign responsibility for obtaining it. An advertised sensor response cannot fill that gap.

Separate the quotation from the release to production

Ask each bidder to identify what their scope covers. A price for the optical pair can exclude controls work, installation, coverage checks and machine validation. A retrofit proposal should identify who will assess other access routes and verify reset and restart behavior. Settle those responsibilities before treating the offers as comparable.

Keep the task drawing, exact parts list and open integration questions together as the design moves to the machine builder. Release to operation belongs with the qualified validation of the complete machine and its protective function. The same record makes it easier to identify what must be reassessed when tooling, access or operating modes change.
